BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS

“We follow as he skips through the streets, leading us to a commercial tower building by the river. Taking the elevator to the tenth floor, we step inside a vacant office space serving as the nerve centre of Louise Lowe’s perceptive production. Monitors rigged by designer Owen Boss flicker and show individuals under surveillance in their homes and on the streets, while glass walls provide a panoramic view and an ambitious prospect: the entire city as mise en scène…  Indeed, the scale of ANU and The Performance Corporation’s co-production seems limitless.
It’s with spectacular direction by Lowe, and meticulous stage management by Caoimhe Regan, that these bodies across the city scene begin to move in time and sequence, creating pictures of surprise encounters. Eventually they join us in the tower and deliver stories collected from real locals, adapted in Tom Swift’s multifaceted script.
But the young man who led us here, caught between delight and despair in Whisker’s incredible turn, is unlike the others: he doesn’t seem to have anybody. “How you look at yourself is important” he says while looking out on the city, embodying the spirit of the event. The imposition of technology and surveillance may suggest a Limerick constantly under suspicion but the view from this far-sighted performance lets us look further. A city is built by dreamers.” – Chris Mc Cormack (Musings in Intermissions)  http://musingsinintermissions.blogspot.ie/2014/12/anu-productions-and-performance.html

We were delighted to have been commissioned by Limerick City of Culture to produce a new piece of work in collaboration with The Performance Corporation.

This new piece – BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS –  a conversation with a city about life, and life’s journey, was performed across Limerick city centre as part of Limerick City of Culture 2014.

This is Beautiful Dreamers. Your view is important. We’re listening. We want to know.

From a special vantage point in the heart of Limerick we invited you to look, listen and converse with city and its people.  Take a journey through the ordinary lives of Limerick…

As nightfall descends across the streets, homes and workplaces of Limerick, a pulsing conversation begins.  Though they may never meet, strangers speak to each other across the night.  They speak of love and laughter, of joy and loss and hope.  Together they remember their past and dream of an imagined future.

What part did you play?  Where did you fit in?

Based on interviews with Limerick’s citizens, Beautiful Dreamers was an interactive performance that reflects the city’s answers in surprising ways and through a variety of forms, including an FM radio frequency that you could tune into whether at the show, at home or in your car.

This ambitious and multi-layered new work forLimerick City of Culture was a collaboration between two of Ireland’s most exciting and innovative companies: Anu Productions who produce experimental work incorporating theatre, visual art and dance andThe Performance Corporation who are masters of site-specific work.  Both companies have created multiple award-winning shows and events that takes theatre out of its traditional setting and into the streets, homes and buildings of wherever they work, creating transformative events that surprise, provoke and entertain.
