Founded in 2009, we work in a studio-based context and our multi-award winning company stands at the forefront of Ireland’s daring new hybrid art. Our aesthetic represents the independent, the innovative, and the experimental and we have become successful at creating a new kind of multi-disciplinary model.
We produce work that is affordable, challenging and places the audience at the very centre of the experience—offering them the opportunity to feel that they are part of something vital and important. Over the past few years we have worked with some of the most talented artists in Ireland and created thirteen seminal productions, gallery installations and museum interpretations.
In 2014, we estimate that over 35,000 people engaged with our work. We premiered VARDO, a new work for Dublin Theatre Festival. We completed our acclaimed MONTO CYCLE with a two day curated international symposium in partnership with CREATE and the Lab/ DCC Arts Office. We piloted the ground-breaking STREET MEDICINE programme in Dublin We were awarded major commissions: including Limerick City of Culture BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS to create a large-scale response to the whole city. We made our UK debut with a commission launching HOME Manchester: ANGEL MEADOW, which told the story of Irish emigrants in Manchester was nominated for a UK National Theatre Award. Cited in the Irish times as Ireland’s leading site-specific specialists, ANU has become renowned for exploring historical events. Placing the audience at the very centre of our practice, there has been international recognition of our thinking about performance, history and socially engaged practice. Our work delves into historical events, with both scalpel like precision and dreamlike intensity. Bringing the voices of the past to the fore, we aim to blur the lines between interactive, participative, site specific and installation art, challenging accepted conventions of theatre and visual art.
We are not interested in simply reinacting or recreating events that we think may have happened in the past, but with a desire to reimagine and remake everything that was radical and alive about the past in the present.
What makes this work all the more immersive, is that very often it is not happening in a carefully constructed, controlled environment. Very often it is colliding with real life. Very often the performance is happening on the street enveloped by real life in real time. Our work extends the debate beyond interaction between performance and space, beyond how the past is propelled into our present. But our motive is consistent: to give agency so audiences can, to borrow a phrase, from Peter Crawley; “become the dramaturges of their own experience”.
